The Repricing of Intelligence, Yet Not the End of Human Value

Citrini Research recently released a piece titled “The 2028 Global Intelligence Crisis”. It is written as a fictional memo from the future, looking back at how intelligence scaled faster than our labor models and institutions could adapt.

 

It is not a prediction.

 

Yet it surfaces a structural tension many of us already see inside enterprise environments.

 

  • This is not hype.

  • This is not doom.

  • This is repricing.

 

“Every economic system we built assumed intelligence scaled at the speed of humans. For the first time, intelligence is scaling at the speed of infrastructure.”

 

Intelligence is entering a scaling curve

At the center of the document is a loop that feels uncomfortable because it is rational:

 

AI improves → companies reduce reliance on human execution → payroll declines → spending declines → companies protect margins → companies invest more into AI → AI improves again.

 

  • No villain.

  • No conspiracy.

  • Just optimization.

 

Each executive decision makes sense in isolation. Yet systems respond to aggregate behavior, not individual intent. When intelligence becomes abundant, scarcity shifts. When scarcity shifts, value shifts.

 

That is the real story here.

Internal capability is quietly changing power dynamics

For decades, enterprises purchased capability. SaaS platforms. Integrations. External APIs. Layered ecosystems.

 

That model assumed capability had to be bought.

 

Now internal teams supported by AI can recreate meaningful portions of that functionality themselves. Not perfectly. Not completely. Yet enough to renegotiate contracts. Enough to consolidate vendors. Enough to reduce dependency.

 

This follows the cycle I have written about for years:

 

Innovate → Feature → Function → Commoditize.

 

What is different now is what is moving through that cycle.

 

  • It is not just features.

  • It is intelligence execution itself.

 

We are seeing this now with OpenClaw - Language + Intent + Execution are collapsing into one layer.

Large organizations that can build safely inside their own governance boundaries gain leverage. They control lineage. They control risk. They reduce exposure. Yet that concentration of capability requires intentional leadership. Because scale without governance creates imbalance.

 

ROI, Hiring & the Contradiction We Need to Address

Here is the tension no one wants to say clearly. Companies talk about massive AI ROI. Functional wins. Efficiency gains. Yet many are also reducing headcount. Classically, when productivity increased, companies hired more people to capture more opportunities.

 

Growth meant expansion.

 

Now we hear, “We are more efficient than ever” even as we learn about workforce reductions.

 

Either AI is not yet delivering on its claims, or organizations are positioning themselves ahead of a structural shift they see coming.

 

If productivity gains are real, the fastest way to protect people is not to fire.

 

  • It is to stop hiring.

  • Do not fire.

  • Just do not hire.

  • Let natural attrition do the work.

  • Let growth absorb efficiency.

  • Let intelligence scaling stabilize the workforce rather than shock it.

 

“If productivity is real, growth should absorb it. If headcount shrinks while wins are declared, we should ask better questions.”

 

The majority of enterprise AI efforts are still struggling to operationalize at scale. Integration is complex. Governance is immature. Adoption is uneven.

 

Yet the direction is undeniable. This is not a bubble. It is a repricing of intelligence, and we are seeing the human layer of that now taking place.

 

Human Intelligence is Being Repriced

This is the first time in history that intelligence itself has entered a technology boom.

 

  • We have scaled labor.

  • We have scaled capital.

  • We have scaled distribution.

 

We have never scaled cognition like this.

 

  • Human intelligence was scarce.

  • Scarcity created value.

  • Machine intelligence introduces abundance.

  • When scarcity shifts, pricing shifts.

  • When pricing shifts, roles shift.

  • This is not elimination.

  • This is elevation.

 

“Human value was never tied to effort alone. It was tied to scarcity. Scarcity is now shifting.”

 

Do Not Commit Intellectual Surrender

The worst thing we can do in this moment is assume the system will fix itself. That is intellectual surrender.

 

  • Intellectual surrender is assuming markets will adapt automatically.

  • Assuming roles will reappear without design.

  • Assuming human transition will take care of itself.

 

That is not leadership. That is abdication.

This is where ACT matters.

 

  • Alignment: ensures we know why we are deploying intelligence.

  • Clarity: ensures people know where they fit next.

  • Transparency: ensures systems are explainable and governable.

 

Without ACT, intelligence scales faster than trust. And trust is what holds institutions together.

 

Human-First is Structural, Not Sentimental

If millions of knowledge workers feel uncertain about their future, uncertainty becomes systemic friction.

 

I have seen this repeatedly in global automation programs. When teams were excluded, resistance surfaced. When teams were enabled, empowered, and emboldened, adoption accelerated.

 

  • Enable means giving people tools.

  • Empower means giving them agency.

  • Embolden means giving them clarity about their path forward.

  • Execution compresses.

  • Orchestration expands.

  • Governance expands.

  • Integration expands.

  • Risk management expands.

  • System design expands.

 

Those are real roles.

 

“The future does not belong to those who execute intelligence. It belongs to those who orchestrate it.”

 

The Real Risk

  • The risk is not AI.

  • The risk is defaulting to process over people.

  • If we prioritize short-term efficiency without human transition, instability follows.

  • If we prioritize people-first transition with structured governance, stability follows.

  • Intelligence is scaling.

  • That is not speculative.

 

The question is whether we guide the repricing of human value intentionally.

 

Or will we start to see many organizations experience this transition emotionally before they experience it operationally:

 

  • Denial: “We don’t need AI, our systems still work.”

  • Anger: “How are smaller companies moving faster than us?”

  • Bargaining: “Maybe we can bolt AI onto what we already have.” 

  • Fatigue: “We invested so much in the old model.”

  • Acceptance: “We have to transform how we operate, not just what tools we use.”

 

“When intelligence becomes abundant, leadership becomes the scarce resource.”

 

  • This is not a call to panic.

  • It is a call to design.

  • To avoid intellectual surrender.

  • To apply Alignment, Clarity, and Transparency.

  • To enable, empower, and embolden.

  • The repricing of intelligence has begun.

  • Now we decide how humans rise with it.
